The Arts

The John and Alice Tyler Gallery at Marymount

“Never give up on your dreams, the creativity of our talents tells a story to future generations – it is our legacy!” - Pascal
In October, 2024, Marymount High School celebrated the grand opening of the Alice & John Tyler Gallery, showcasing the groundbreaking work of renowned artist Pascal (1914 - 2021). Pascal gained worldwide recognition for her evocative stainless steel sculptures and impressionist paintings, but set herself apart by inventing her own technique of sculpting glass with a hammer and chisel, a practice known for its danger and difficulty.

Pascal’s works have been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., as well as featured in private collections of luminaries such as President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, John Kluge, and members of the British Royal Family.

Made possible by a generous gift from the Alice C. Tyler Art Trust by the artist's daughter and trustee, Susanne Jill Buffano Petty '59, the new gallery is housed in Marymount’s Digital Resource Center, and will feature six to eight different pieces of art from the Alice and John Tyler’s Pascal collection on a rotating basis each year.

Every once in a while a nova breaks into our awareness like a meteor, but often it goes unseen unless the right circumstances bring the talent to our lives and cognition. Such a talent is Pascal, the only woman glass sculptor in the world. How did this amazing woman find this elusive, impossibly difficult, unforgiving medium of glass to be her subject to bring such beauty into the world?

Marymount High School is honored to be the new home for Pascal’s  prestigious collection, The Alice and John Tyler Pascal Glass collection, formerly housed at the Corcoran Museum In Washington, D.C.  How fitting that the new home is Marymount High School: inspiring boldness, art and creativity for women for over one hundred years.

Pascal’s magnificence must not be obscured, it must inspire, speak and shout the intelligence of women to future generations of young women. Pascal’s legacy will continue with this most generous and monumental gift to Marymount High School.
