Varsity Basketball Takes home Sunshine League Championship
The Sailors’ Varsity Basketball season finished with an undefeated Sunshine League Championship. They head into CIF Southern Section Division IVAA playoffs with an 18-5 overall record and 8-0 in league play. Currently, the Sailors are ranked 4th in Division IVAA, brackets will be released Sunday, February 14.
The Sailors battled adversity early on with multiple injuries to key players. A few of their losses came during that time. Those losses helped build the character of the team and made them a stronger unit. The Sailors finished in the top three of two tournaments this season, which included a runner up finish at the Max Preps Tournament in Palm Springs. Marymount had a few signature wins over formidable opponents, such as St. Paul's, who was last years CIF Division IVA runner up. Another program changing victory came against Notre Dame Academy who had beaten the Sailors each of the last three years. The Sailors captured that win with an impressive 67-36 victory.
Moving forward, the Sailors are eager to ride the momentum of their solid regular season into the playoffs. They are hoping to secure a top three seed and win the CIF Championship, a goal that the team had set at the end of last season when their hopes were dashed in the quarterfinals. The Sailors will say goodbye to six seniors this year, but have some fresh talent at the Varsity and JV levels, with hopes to continue building a solid winning program each and every year.
