Last season, Varsity Volleyball had a top ten finish in all tournaments, were Mission League Co-Champions and made it to the quarterfinals in CIF. Through these experiences, the Sailors have grown stronger and look to approach the 2016-2017 season with gusto. Kicking things off in the 2016 summer, the Sailors put in the hard work with beach conditioning and tough gym practices. The summer culminated in a large camp/tryout attendance and a HUGE Sailor tournament win capturing the Queen of the Court Tournament Elite Varsity Level Title defeating the #1 nationally-ranked Mater Dei team twice!
This season, the team seeks to improve serve and receive, blocking and consistent hitting. Varsity has depth at the outside hitter position and passing and looks to continue to display confidence on the court. The coaching staff is excited about starting another competitive season in the Mission League!
JV Volleyball
The Junior Varsity Volleyball season is about to get off to a great start! The Sailors have a strong team laden with promising freshman and experienced sophomore leaders. Caroline Douglas and Mary McGeagh are two sophomore defenders who contribute both on the court and with great vocal leadership. Sophie Globe is one of the most technically sound freshman liberos the program has ever had. Grace DiNapoli and Jacqueline Kortekaas will continue to develop connections with a ton of strong pin hitters. The team’s pins are young, but extremely dynamic: Amara Aimufua, Taylor Ladwig, and Addy Edwards are all freshman that will see big roles on the team. Olivia Devereux will help to lead this group and guide the younger players. Emma Klein is one of the most athletic middle hitters who has improved tremendously throughout the summer, along with Madison McMahon. The Sailors plan to focus on operating a sophisticated offense, coordinating team blocking and committing to the minutiae of the game in the short term, while focusing on the season goal of winning League! The team is well on their way with practices up to this point focusing on drilling technique in the mornings and playing game-like situations in the evenings. The team has already bonded off the court, which has translated into gelling on the court!
Frosh/Soph Volleyball
The Sailor Frosh/Soph Volleyball Team had an incredibly successful 2015-2016 season, consisting of a league championship and only taking two losses during the season. Last year’s success has motivated the incoming Sailors to carry that momentum forward leading into a lot of hard beach and gym work and a large summer camp turnout. Volleyball tryouts were long and difficult, but a great group of 12 athletes rose above to represent the Frosh/Soph Team. The team has a well-balanced and talented group with many players bringing a lot of club level volleyball experience to the table. Though the offense will take time to develop, the passing and defense of the team are early highlights of what is to come. The coaching staff expects a very successful season from these athletes and look to bring home another league title!
