As Head Coach for Marymount Varsity Soccer,
this was one of the best seasons Coach Green has had for a long time.
This season's team came together with great spirit and commitment.
Each day Coach Green looked forward to going down to the field to coach
this group of young ladies. The accumulation of the team began in
November with 3 Seniors, 8 Juniors, 5 Sophomores and 2 Freshmen, all of
whom shared great chemitry, and seemed to get along really well.
Practices were filled with lots of laughs and good times in between
very serious practices as the team was willing to work extremely hard.
Marymount played the Crossroads Tournament and reached the final only
to be beaten by Oaks Christian 3-0. After the game, the players
showed great tenacity and wanted to play Oaks Christian again.
Following that experience came another poignant bonding experience for
Marymount when the team traveled to a overnight 2-day tournament in
Temecula. The Sailors played very well and finished in the top 4 losing
only 1 game.
With the New Year came the second phase of competition for Varsity
Soccer. The Sailors headed into league competition and had two
memorable, well-played games with N.D.A., but came up short both times
1-0. Things continued to become challenging with the loss of both
central midfielders, Ashley Chavez and Mia Towle to serious ACL
injuries/surgeries, which left Chavez and Towle unable to play for the
rest of the season. Although the team was gravely disappointed to lose
such exceptional players, they decided that this was the time to step
up their performances and used this loss as a motivational factor for
the rest of the season. Varsity Soccer finished 2nd in the Sunshine
League, with an our overall record of 14-4-4, which advanced Varsity to
play-offs for the 19th straight season. Varsity beat Monrovia in the
1st round 4-3 and then played last years runner-up, Downey, beating
them 1-0 in a thrilling double overtime contest. Varsity advanced to
the Quater Finals to compete aganist the 2007-2008 CIF Champion, Oaks
Christian, for the second time this season. The girls knew this was
their chance for redemption. Marymount played brilliant soccer and
held Oaks Christian until the last five minutes of the game, however,
Oaks Chistian seized the moment and scored two goals.
Parting words from Coach Green:
"Thanks for a season to remember and now it is on to the golf course..." Coach Green.
