Sailor Volleyball Begins Season with a BIG Tournament Win!

The Marymount Sailors captured the 2016 Queen's Court Tournament Title defeating #1 nationally ranked Mater Dei two times along the way! This victory is even more impressive when you factor in that the Sailors were a late entry team to the tournament!

Along the path to victory, the Sailors defeated five strong teams, including a win against rival Great Oak 25-23, 25-17, where Varsity stepped up their passsing.
Key Stats of the Game:
Devon Newberry: 9 kills, 8 digs and 1 ace
Jenni Burke: 7 kills
Yurika Boyd: 7 digs
Grace Frohling: 11 assists, 2 kills
Haley Kortekaas: 12 assists
The Sailors had 6 aces overall!

The dominance continued with a win in pool play over Mater Dei, 25-17, 21-25, 17- 15. The Sailors handled the Mater Dei team very well in the first set.  Mater Dei was down a few starters due to summer plans, but the team was still fierce with a dominant middle and two strong hitters on the fight side who had many kills against Marymount. Mater Dai should be a team to reckon with this season!

In game two, Marymount lost a little steam, but the Sailors quickly regrouped. Devon Newberry had her strongest match so far this season passing a 2.8 and hitting 400.  Cami Carfino also passed well and had a hitting percentage at about 500.  Marymount had 33 kills and 5 aces overall.  To come back from a 3-10 deficit is almost impossible, but Marymount never quit and stepped up their defense to secure the win!
Key Stats of the Game:
Grace Frohling: 10 kills, 2 aces
Hailey Kortekaas: 9 digs

The Sailors continued their team effort against St Joseph's, whose serves challenged the Sailors' passing strength. Yurika Boyd passed a 2.0 to help her teammates rally through this challenge. Despite any difficulties, the Sailors' 14 players all helped contribute to the win.  St. Joseph had 2 great outside hitters who hit well from the back and commanded the attention of the Sailors from the get-go.  This proved to provide preparation for Marymount to amp up their defense. Devon Newberry had 6 kills and Emma Moffet had 5, an early season high for Emma. Stronger serving from the Sailors in the second game was essential along with Lexi Freund's ability to set up her teammates in key moments. Some match highlights include: Ruby Lightbourn's great cross court kill over the block; Mitzie Novicic's first kill as a right side hitter; and once again, Taylor Fourtiq's clutch serving and dominant aces at the end of the match and her on-point connection with a great jump set for match point with Emma Moffet! In the end, the Sailors pulled away with a win 25-21, 25-20.

Marymount's defeat of Beckman 25-23, 25-15 showcased the Sailors ability to dominate play and beat a team by ten points. The Sailors punctuated the win with an ace on match point by Mitzie Novicic.
Game Stats:
Grace Frohling: 6 digs, 6 kills.
Lauren Douglas: passed 2.0.
Sarah Allman: 4 aces to save the win in game 1
Ruby Lightbourn: 3 kills

After capturing five notable wins, the Sailors arrived at the Queen's Court Tournament Championship Match. The final match was a rematch of the hard fought pool two match of Saturday vs. Mater Dei.  The main difference was Mater Dei had their head coach, a stalwart leader, as well as, the addition of a great outside hitter.  Game one was intense and was point for point until at 12-12, the Mater Dei setter went back and jump severed 5 in a row.  These serves are definitely the hardest serves Marymount has seen all year, even in practice.  Sarah Almond's nice serving run in that game helped Marymount fight back and come within two points of the win.  In game two, Mater Dei remained in control, capturing a lead of 20-15 at one point during the game.  Enter Lauren Douglas, who had a great run of serves during this game, followed by strong Sailor defense, bringing the score to an even tie at 20-20.  The third game was also in Mater Dei's control, until Marymount called a time out at 3-7. Both setters who served ten points each, were very strong at the serving line, hitting the area and putting heat on the ball.  The other serving studs were Lauren Douglas with 9 great serves and Sarah Allman who served 14! Both teams played great, with Marymount capturing the win with an ace by Devon Newberry 26- 28, 27-25, 15-12!

Additional Stats:
Devon Newberry: lead the team with 13 kills.
Grace Frohling: hit above 440
Jenni Burke: hit above 440
Emma Moffet: hit above 440
Devon Newberry, Cami Carfino and Yurika Boyd all passed above a 2.1 countering the strong serving of Mater Dei.

GO SAILORS!!!
