POWER CLASSIC TOURNAMENT @ REDONDO UNION HIGH SCHOOL
FRIDAY 10/21
OXNARD
25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-15
On Day 1 of the Redondo Power Classic Tournament, Marymount Sailors played the best 3 out of 5 games because they were in a three team pool. Despite a long warm up, the Sailors were off to a slow start in their first match against the Oxnard Yellowjackets. Game 1 passed quickly, beginning with Emma Moffet killing it—her best hit of the season on the first point. Marymount won Game 1, 25-21, with 18 kills due to the team passing nails, which allowed the offense to flow. The Sailors lost Game 2, 20-25, as they began to unravel a bit: struggling in serve receive, missing serves, and making quite a few hitting, defense, and blocking errors. In Game 3, the Sailors pulled together as a team, cut down on errors, and took control of the game to win 25-15. The positive energy from Game 3 carried over into the next game, the Sailors winning 25-15 in Game 4, owing the victory in the last game to stellar passing, yet again.
Together, the Sailors got 10 aces—3 from Grace Frohling, 2 from Jennie Burke, 2 from Sarah Allman, 2 from Yurika Boyd—and 50 kills, Emma Moffet and Cami Carfino leading the team with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Grace Frohling had 30 assists.
SCRIPPS RANCH
25-12, 25-21, 25-23
In their second and final match of Day 1, playing the best 3 of 5 games, Marymount played Scripps Ranch High School. Game 1 included few errors and stellar defense on the Sailors’ part with 17 digs and 4 blocks, holding the Scripps Ranch Falcons to 12 points in the 25-12 win. Game 2 passed with much of the same, however serving consistently proved challenging for the Sailors, their errors leading to a much closer game, 25-21. In Game 3, the Sailors and the Falcons fought for each point. Nearing the end of the game, the Sailors led 22-16, but the Falcons battled back to 23-22, before the Sailors fought for those last 2 kills to win 25-23.
The team had a combined 44 digs, the defense led by Devon Newberry, with 2 blocks and 10 digs, and Yurika Boyd who had 9 digs. Devon Newberry also led the team in aces (3) and kills (12), while Grace Frohling led the team with assists and had 2 aces.
