Basketball Season Preview

The Sailor Basketball program welcomes three new coaches this year: Head Coach Edison Locke, Assistant Varsity Coach Morgan Mason and JV Head Coach Marcus Adams.

With a successful 2015-2016 season, 19-6 and (8-0 in league), Sunshine League Champions, and Div. 4AA quarter finalist, the goal of the coaching staff this year is to teach a young team how to compete with energy and intensity and further establish the foundation of Sailor basketball.

With the move into the Mission League for the next two years, Coach Locke looks to teach the team how to compete on a more aggressive level from start to finish. The Sailors plan on playing a very fast up and down pace, making their opponents play very fast, forcing them to make the mistakes. Coach Locke commented, “We plan on taking the experience we will get from a strong and aggressive league into the playoffs, and to make a strong run.”

The Varsity team will have a young but strong guard play, with returning Sophomore Jenna Rotheram and Junior Malia Verge who is returning to the team after taking a year off. Coach Locke boasts five three-point shooters that can stretch the floor and open up the inside for our raw but athletic post players. The Sailors are also excited to have two incoming freshmen make the varsity team, Kelly Sodl and Talia Romo-Kikuchi. The coaches were quite impressed with the progress these two freshman made during the summer practices workouts.

JV Basketball

With most of the returning JV players moving up to Varsity, the Sailors are excited to have a young JV team filed with freshman and sophomores who are eager to learn. Coach Adams feels with the introduction of a new coaching staff, new system, new style, and a new way of learning the game, the team has shown great potential. The goal for the JV team this season is to continue to create a strong bond with each other that drives the athletes positively throughout their journey.

Coach Adams emphasizes, “learning, that together everyone achieves more (Team) and applying our best effort will ultimately be our keys to a successful year.” Combine the growth that has already taken place, coupled with the fun the girls are experiencing playing the game, it appears the Sailors have all the tools in place to achieve great things this year.
