With the start of the new season, second year coach, Kylie Helms, is looking forward to seeing her Sailors thrive with another year under their belts. The team put in hours of practice and conditioning over the summer months and during preseason workouts that started in August. With the extra time, it has helped the team gain conditioning and tactical knowledge of the game. Coach Helms is hoping these skills will come in to play now the season is in full play.
Marymount welcomes Assistant Coach Kate Bradley to the team. Coach Bradley an accomplished player herself and goalie coach is already impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm and dedication to work hard. Both Coaches believe the Sailors will bring serious competition to the league this year.
With the growing interest in the sport last season there was an improvement both in the understanding and love of the game. Coach Helms commented, “We have a lot of returning players who have taken the preparation workouts very seriously and emerged as team leaders. Such as: Ally Walsh, Sarah Fahn, Megan Ryan, Grace Allegrette, Sophia Barnes and Lauren O'Brien.”
It was clear after tryouts, the girls demonstrated a desire to grow individually and collectively as a team. The coaches feel, across the board, the Sailors possess great strengths specifically with speed and strength. Coach Helms is confident there will be players who emerge as leaders on the team, specifically at the center hole set and guard positions.
As the season progresses, the team will keep up the intensity and focus on their training. A few games in, the plan seems to be working. With the program already bringing home a 3rd place finish in the JV Bonita Tournament and crushing victories for both levels over Venice High School.
